Drugs

Posted by Healthy Life Style Saturday, April 16, 2011 3 comments

Drugs are chemicals that change the way a person's body works. You've probably heard that drugs are bad for you, but what does that mean and why are they bad?

Medicines Are Legal Drugs
If you've ever been sick and had to take medicine, you already know about one kind of drugs. Medicines are legal drugs, meaning doctors are allowed to prescribe them for patients, stores can sell them, and people are allowed to buy them. But it's not legal, or safe, for people to use these medicines any way they want or to buy them from people who are selling them illegally.

Cigarettes and Alcohol
Cigarettes and alcohol are two other kinds of legal drugs. (In the United States, adults 18 and over can buy cigarettes and those 21 and over can buy alcohol.) But smoking and excessive drinking are not healthy for adults and off limits for kids.

Illegal Drugs
When people talk about the "drug problem," they usually mean abusing legal drugs or using illegal drugs, such as marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine, LSD, crystal meth and heroin. (Marijuana is generally an illegal drug, but some states allow doctors to prescribe it to adults for certain illnesses.)

DEPRESSION

Posted by Healthy Life Style 3 comments

Are you familiar with major depression? People with major depression will look persistently sad. Maybe you ever saw this kind of people or even you ever experienced it. To overcome the major depression, it is a great idea to find out about the causes of major depression in advance. At one of the sites that I found it was written that stress and genetics can cause Major Depression. There are many symptoms of Major Depression that I found on the website too including insomnia that nearly every day. I believe that many people have insomnia, just like me. So to find out whether you have major depression or not, you should find out first whether if you have one of the causes of major depression.
In addition to insomnia, loss of energy nearly every day is also one of the Symptoms of Major Depression. In addition, you can find the diminished ability to think and others as the Symptoms of Major Depression. After I read the information about major depression, I considered about the causes of major depression.
I thought that I probably have major depression. So, I tried to consult with my doctor. It turned out that my doctor gave me one of the antidepressant medications. He said that it can be used to treat depression. From some types of antidepressants, my doctor decided to give me Tricyclic antidepressant. I tried to get the information about Tricyclic antidepressants on the website, it turned out that it was known as the effective medication.

Some people say that depression feels like a black curtain of despair coming down over their lives. Many people feel like they have no energy and can't concentrate. Others feel irritable all the time for no apparent reason. The symptoms vary from person to person, but if you feel "down" for more than two weeks, and these feelings are interfering with your daily life, you may be clinically depressed.

Most people who have gone through one episode of depression will, sooner or later, have another one. You may begin to feel some of the symptoms of depression several weeks before you develop a full-blown episode of depression. Learning to recognize these early triggers or symptoms and working with your doctor will help to keep the depression from worsening.

How To Clean and Brush Your Teeth

Posted by Healthy Life Style 4 comments

A modern history of tooth brushing: Brushing teeth is no simple process any more. As science and dentistry have progressed, much has been learnt about the bad consequences of earlier tooth brushing practices, with the result that many of us today are now considered to be brushing our teeth the wrong way, even though it was the way we were taught to brush our teeth as children.
One way we were taught to brush our teeth was to use a hard tooth brush, so that the bristles would get in between the teeth and get rid of plaque quicker from the teeth as well.

The other common practice we were taught about tooth brushing was to use long, horizontal brushing strokes - the back and forth strokes across the teeth; like using a saw.
Well, science and dentistry and time have shown these common tooth brushing practices may benefit our teeth in the short term, but such tooth brushing also does drastic damage to the teeth:

The long hard horizontal strokes of the tooth brushing acts like a saw against the teeth, so the teeth may look fine in a mirror, but as they fall out or intense pain sets in, we find out out from a dentist that a groove has been worn through the base of the teeth, compromising the teeth. The dentist will then likely advise you to use desensitizing tooth paste, soft tooth brushes, gentle tooth brushing and a different way of brushing. Essentially though, your teeth were badly damaged by trying to clean them the wrong way by today's dental standards.

There are lots of toothpastes being sold, choosing the right ones are really important as they give the teeth added protection.
1.. Look for toothpastes with added fluoride, as the fluoride can penetrate the enamel and strengthen the enamel considerably, which then protects the tooth much better from decay.
2.. Tar-tar control, anti plaque fluoride toothpaste is even better, as it helps to clean the teeth really, really well, removing all the plaque you can get at with the toothbrush and it strengthens the teeth at the same time.
3... Toothpastes with added mouth wash ingredients help kill any germs that may stay on the teeth following brushing.
4... Long acting toothpastes provide several hours of protection against plaque, following tooth brushing.
The best toothpaste to use is one that combines all of the above characteristics.

1.. There is the classic real of floss
and you break about 30 centimeters, 12 inches off, wrap most of the floss around a finger on one hand and a smaller amount of the floss around the finger on the other hand and then move the floss up and down and in and out. If the floss gets too dirty or frayed, you just roll more floss from the finger with the most unused floss, wind the used bit onto the other finger and then floss some more. This type of flossing is a bit clumsy and bit time consuming, but worked pretty well. The piece of floss is discarded after the teeth cleaning is over.

.. Then there are the more modern flossing teeth cleaning tools, called floss picks, which come in two varieties:

.. The throw away is just a dental floss pick that you throw out after one flossing of the teeth.
The other variety allows you to have a nice handle like that of a toothbrush and the floss pick head sits on the end of it. When the daily flossing is over, the floss pick head is discarded and a new floss pick head reinserted.

The retail price of the vaccine is about $125 per dose ($375 for full series). Is the HPV vaccine covered by insurance plans? While some insurance companies may cover the vaccine, others may not. Most large insurance plans usually cover the costs of recommended vaccines.
While some insurance companies may cover the vaccine, others may not. Most large insurance plans usually cover the costs of recommended vaccines.

How can I get help paying for the vaccine?
Children age 18 and younger may be eligible to get vaccines, including the HPV vaccine, for free through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program if they are: Medicaid eligible; uninsured; or American Indian or Alaska Native. Doctors may charge a small fee to give each shot. However VFC vaccines cannot be denied to an eligible child if the family cannot afford the fee.
Some states also provide free or low-cost vaccines at public health department clinics to people without health insurance coverage for vaccines. Contact your State Health Department to see if your state has such a program.

Will girls/women who have been vaccinated still need cervical cancer screening?

Yes, women will still need regular cervical cancer screening (Pap tests) because the vaccine will NOT protect against all HPV types that cause cervical cancer. Also, women who got the vaccine after becoming sexually active may not get the full benefit of the vaccine if they had already acquired HPV.

Skin Cancer (Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer)

Posted by Healthy Life Style 1 comments

Introduction

Skin cancer is the most common form of human cancer. It is estimated that over 1 million new cases occur annually. The annual rates of all forms of skin cancer are increasing each year, representing a growing public concern. It has also been estimated that nearly half of all Americans who live to age 65 will develop skin cancer at least once.

The most common warning sign of skin cancer is a change in the appearance of the skin, such as a new growth or a sore that will not heal.

The term "skin cancer" refers to three different conditions. From the least to the most dangerous, they are:

basal cell carcinoma (or basal cell carcinoma epithelioma)
squamous cell carcinoma (the first stage of which is called actinic keratosis) melanoma

The two most common forms of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Together, these two are also referred to as nonmelanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is generally the most serious form of skin cancer because it tends to spread (metastasize) throughout the body quickly. Skin cancer is also known as skin neoplasia.

SKIN TAG

Posted by Healthy Life Style 0 comments

What is a skin tag?

A skin tag is a common, acquired benign skin growth that looks like a small piece of hanging skin. Skin tags are often described as bits of skin- or flesh-colored tissue that projects from the surrounding skin from a small, narrow stalk. They typically occur in characteristic locations including the neck, underarms, eyelids, and under the breasts (especially where underwire bras rub directly beneath the breasts). Although skin tags may vary somewhat in appearance, they are usually smooth or slightly wrinkled and irregular, flesh-colored or slightly more brown, and hang from the skin by a small stalk. Early or beginning skin tags may be as small as a flattened pinpoint-sized bump around the neck. Some skin tags may be as large as a big grape.

DOCTOR TO PATIENT

Can Soaps & Detergents Cause a Rash?
For years, patients have been coming to my office with eczema, complaining that they had changed their soaps and detergents but their rashes had not gone away.

The first thing I always tell them is: "Contrary to what you've heard, eczema is rarely, if ever, caused by soaps and detergents."

I say this because it fits with my experience. People get rashes when they haven't used anything different, and they don't become consistently better if they keep shifting products in a futile effort to locate the culprit in the laundry.

And now -- at last! -- there is published scientific evidence to back up my experience.
Is soap to blame for allergic contact dermatitis? »

Do you have skin problems?

Is your skin itching, breaking out, covered in a rash, or playing host to strange spots? Skin inflammation, changes in texture or color, and spots may be the result of infection, a chronic skin condition, or contact with an allergen or irritant. You can learn to recognize common adult skin problems. Yet, while many are minor, they may signal something more serious, so always consult a doctor for proper diagnosis.

Hives (urticaria)

Hives, a common allergic reaction that looks like welts, are often itchy, stinging, or burning. They may appear anywhere and last minutes or days. Severe hives can cause difficult breathing (get immediate medical attention if this occurs). Medications, foods, or food additives, temperature extremes, and infections like strep throat can cause hives. Removing the trigger often resolves the hives in days or weeks. Antihistamines can provide relief.
